ABOUT YORK, CATS & RUTTERKIN
The cat has been the emblem of York for centuries. Many thousands of visitors each year follow the York Cat Trail of over 20 feline statues on many of its historic buildings.
Rutterkin is the famous York cat who rose to prominence on the York Gin cat and castle logo, adorning hundreds of thousands of bottles of spirits. He has jumped off the castle wall on to his very own spirit label complete with rum barrel.
Who was Rutterkin?
A 17th Century cat, Rutterkin was the familiar of a coven of Bottesford Witches accused of bewitching the Duke of York. This “swaggering gallant” embodies the spirit of his rum - spicy, full of character and with a beautiful sweet heart.
More about the rum
The Roman founders of York were lovers of ginger. Centuries later, York became ‘The Chocolate City’ thanks to Terry's and Rowntree's.
These historic York ingredients coalesce and complement each other, adding sweetness, profundity and a fiery burst to this spiced rum.
Cats have been a symbol of York for centuries of the city’s dark, rebellious and rum-soaked history.
